Commons Network took part in a three day mini conference in Budapest with 30 actors to discuss the strengthening Civil Society in Europe. Organisers where the Central European University's School for Public Policy and Open Society Foundations Europe.
In a time of democracy under siege, either through the democratic deficit of Brussels, the corporate capture of politics, or authoritarian regimes, how can civil society make a larger impact? How can it be more representative, and how can it be a strong actor for change? We discussed topics such as the need to move out of specific silos, for cross connections between movements, and to have a joint vocabulary and purpose.
