March 24 2015 A Broad public interest coalition issues a statement on the Trade Secrets Directive being dicussed in the European Parliament. As it stands the Directive threatens access to information in the areas of health and environment, and poses a threat to free speech, whistleblower and worker mobility.
Commons Network is especially concerned with the limiting of transparency regarding corporate held information and data that is in the public interest. What is needed is a move towards more opennes and scrutiny of for example clinical trials data of medicines, to ensure safety and efficacy. Instead we see an effort to limit transparency through an overly broad defintition of trade secrets and poor safeguards in the public interest.
