We are leaving X, as of today we will no longer post on our account.
As an organisation that advocates for sovereign, resilient, and democratic digital landscapes and, more broadly, for the collective transformation of a caring and just future, Commons Network has long felt uncomfortable with using this platform. We have struggled to balance our use of Big Tech while communicating to our audience the need to look towards more democratic and caring systems. However, the value of X is no longer outweighed by the way it is run.
Under its new owner, Elon musk, the platform has taken a shift: it promotes hate speech, far-right conspiracy theories, and racism. X is a toxic platform that enables Musk to shape political decisions. The involvement of Elon Musk in Trump’s campaign has only crystallized our decision to leave the platform.
We prefer platforms that offer a democratic approach to tech and data governance. For this reason, we are shifting to BlueSky. Although BlueSky is not our ideal model (there’s well meaning people behind the platform but it is still funded by venture capital), it opens up many opportunities for sovereignty, autonomy and resilience that X does not. We will make this compromise here, but keep advocating for more caring, democratic, and collectively owned platforms under the framework of Digital Commons.
We acknowledge we have an engaged audience in X, that’s why we invite you to join us on other platforms such as Linkedin, BlueSky, and Mastodon.
